PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has been notified of the vacancy for the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
EC secretary Datuk Kamaruzaman Mohd Noor said the letter was sent to EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman through a faxed letter at noon Friday.
The commission, he said, would be holding a meeting on Wednesday to determine the date for nomination and date for polling if there was a contest for the Permatang Pauh seat.
"The meeting will also determine the dates to issue the writ and notices to pave the way for the by-election as well as to decide on which electoral roll to be used," he said when contacted here Friday.
Kamaruzaman said the by-election should be held within 60 days from now, adding that there was no provision that disallows campaigning or election to be held during the fasting month, which starts on Sept 1.
The Permatang Pauh seat fell vacant following the resignation of its Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail who made the decision to make way for her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is PKR adviser.
